The Frankish Coat Is Done!

Wish I had brooches that spiffy for it... I found a very interesting belt at Goodwill the other day. Well, maybe it was a belt, maybe a necklace. Fairly light, disks about 1.5" across, inscribed with an intricate pattern. I showed them to Fjorleif, and she said that they would need at least a partial disk in back, as well as a pin. Might be possible...

So the coat is done! Orange wool outside, cobalt blue wool inside, with a nutmeg brown felt finding the edges. It turned out really pretty and I'm happy with it. Certainly nicer than the ratty old raincoat.

I finished the second armband on the bliaut, and next comes bias tape and side seams. In the meantime I have a gown for Gryphon Blackhart started. Oddly enough, I'd rather sew for him.

James has a new name for Amalric- "Captain Chaos"! It soooo fits! I am sorely tempted to make him a cape. Wonder if I could talk him into wearing his underwear on the outside? No, wait- better not. He might actually do it...

Saturday I took Gemma (and Mike, who decided that he wanted to go along too) to Powell's, to show her where to look for medieval stuff. They spent $$$, so they seem to have found it. I managed to get out of there for only $9- I got a copy of the instruction book that the Frankish noblewomen Dhuoda wrote for her son William. Very keen.

Sunday Wanda and I went to lunch (we overslept so it really wasn't brunch) and then stopped at Goodwill. She came home with clothes, I found a nice basket/box to stack my Rxs in, so I could take them out of the cardboard box they were in. Very nice and much neater-looking.

And it's Monday now- I should go to bed- I have a hot sewing machine to slave over in the morning...

Hi, I was looking for other people in the SCA interested in Frankish stuff, and found this blog. I'm in Madrone.

Kewl!

I'm in Three Mountains! So what keen Frankish stuff are you into? And are you going to Crown or Egils?

Don't be lonely! See, you made a new friend from Madrone! : )

Also, I too love Sting! I think my favorite of his, lyrics-wise, is either Heavy Cloud, No Rain (cuz it's clever and whimsical) or Shape of My Heart (cuz it's just damn sexy).

Also, y'know what this blog-o-yours needs? Pictures. You or Wanda don't have a digital camera do you? Cuz while I can *sort of* envision a Frankish coat, it'd be real nifty to see it!

Ok, back to work!

Working on the picture thing- not easy for a technophobe like myself!

My fave Sting songs... Fields of Gold, Brand New Day, When We Dance, Seven Days... basically most of his work.

OK, the better picture rather than his undies on the outside would be shirtless with braes and trews and the cape. Now that would be a nice "Captain Medieval Chaos" And I bet you could document it somewhere! Oh oh oh. Add to it a nice felt tall hat, 'cause every super hero needs a fancy head covering.

Oh I am SO glad I am all the way down in Meridies and can't get thwacked. :)

The though of Amalric shirtless... Whoo! Anyone got a fan? (He's a GOODLOOKIN' boy!)

And what are you doing still in Meridies? Silly persons! You belong in An Tir! I want to torture my goddaughters in the House Of Pain!

I'm interested in calligraphy and illumination, and I've been working on a Merovingian poem. I've kludged together a Merovingian outfit, but large scale sewing's not my strong point. I'm meaning to learn tablet-weaving and work on sprang and think more about hairstyles and get my hands on a copy of Anthimus.

Kewl! SO what are you using for sources on your outfit? (I have a pretty major quibble about the standard way they're interpreting the gown length...) And a Merovingian poem? Wow! In Frankish, or the veryveryvery early French? And are you writing in Carolingian miniscule, or that odd unreadable Merovingian script? There's also a Lombardic hand that Hlutwige like, when she feels like torturing the heralds...

I got your email address from Aelfgifu (who rox my sox!) and I'll drop you a line after the weekend- I'm teaching at the Ithra in Fire Mountain Keep, and my head is stuffed with handouts and bibliography right now...

My basic outfit is undertunic + tube pinned at the shoulders. Here's an old picture (more recent ones would show some triangular-spiral embroidery at the sleeve):

I have a giant heavy book which reproduces a bunch of the archaeological drawings from the Arnegunde burial, and a rectangular-construction coat.

My poem is in Latin. (There is one extant sixth-century Latin poem by a Gallo-Roman woman who probably knew Venantius Fortunatus. It is AWESOME.) I used a precursor to the illegible charter hand. Here's mine:

Here's my calligraphic model (from the Homilies of Saint Avitus of Vienne):

Once upon a time I did an Utrecht Psalter scroll project:

Oooh! Citation please? I haven't seen that work yet- and Katrine has been scouting Frankish stuff for me (She is the ILL goddess!)

I've been modelling my stuff on the nearly-Byzantine stuff you see in the Carolingian illustrations. I haven't seen appropriate pins in the Merovingian digs to indicate a tube dress, so I'm very curious to see your reference!
