I came across this site last night (http://www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/sets/72157625464218629/with/5287955310/) and clicked through them with a peculiar mixture of fascination and sadness. The faces show emotions from hardness to despair, and overwhelmingly the grind of poverty- and many of them children. The grime, the rags, the destitution. And 140 years later, I feel an incredible pity. Did anyone care about them then, when they needed it?
